The lulo is a South American nightshade plant. Their fruits resemble a mixture of orange and tomato and their contents are usually made into a delicious juice and served as a "royal drink"
.The berries of the lulo plant grow to between three and six centimetres in size. They are mainly called lulos in Colombia, but in many other South American countries they are called naranjillas (little orange).
Taste and use of the lulo
.The taste of lulos is reminiscent of a mixture of rhubarb, guava, pineapple and strawberries. Slightly acidic, but very exotic. The inside of the lulo consists of gelatinous pulp, which contains the edible seeds of the plant. Externally, on the other hand, they appear to be a cross between a tomato and an orange, but when ripe they are somewhat smaller than tomatoes.
If the pulp is not processed into juice, the lulo is split in the middle and the pulp is simply pressed into the mouth. Of course, you can also spoon them out like a kiwi. In their countries of origin, especially in Colombia, lulos are mainly processed into juice. Because of its taste, this is called "the royal drink". Colombians, for example, swear by it.
Ingredients of the Lulo
Lulos, like many exotic fruits, contain a lot of vitamin C. In addition, they contain provitamin A, vitamins of the B group, calcium, phosphorus and iron as a trace element.
Preparation
For a refreshing juice put the pulp of 3 lulos in a blender with 300ml of water. Mixed briefly, the pulp separates from the seeds. The juice is then sieved to finally separate the seeds from the aromatic yellow juice. Return the juice to the blender and add a tablespoon of sugar to taste.
