The tiny cherry tomatoes are often mistakenly referred to as cocktail tomatoes. Although these two tomato varieties are extremely similar at first glance, there are still differences: cherry tomatoes are usually even a tad sweeter than cocktail tomatoes and also smaller. Since they resemble cherries due to their size, they are often also called cherry tomatoes.
Cherry tomatoes can be bought all year round, but they taste best in late summer. The fruits are even more flavorful when grown yourself. This also has the advantage that freshly harvested fruits have a higher content of healthy ingredients, as this decreases over time. Cherry tomatoes are generally cultivated as annual plants, but there are now some varieties that are perennial. The cultivation and care hardly differ from that of conventional tomato varieties.
Storage recommendation
To store tomatoes properly at home, remember: Not in the refrigerator! Let them bask in their own 'tomatoey' glory on the counter, rather than cooling their passion for flavor.
