The highly concentrated plant-based active ingredients caraway and peppermint have been popular spices and medicinal plants for treating gastrointestinal problems for a very long time. In the case of caraway, the essential oil is extracted from the caraway fruit, while in the case of peppermint, the aromatic ingredients are found in the leaves. In Gaspan® capsules, both highly concentrated essential oils are combined and complement each other in their effects: Caraway oil has a carminative effect and inhibits gas formation in the intestines. Peppermint oil has an antispasmodic and analgesic effect. This means that Gaspan® can be used specifically for digestive problems such as flatulence, a feeling of fullness and abdominal pain. Note: The amount of caraway and peppermint oil in a daily dose of 2 Gaspan® capsules corresponds to approx. 11 litres of tea or 73 cups. Gaspan® works directly in the intestines. Thanks to the enteric-coated soft capsule, the highly concentrated active ingredients of Gaspan® are gently transported to the intestines and develop their effect there.

Application

Only 1 Gaspan® capsule 2 times a day

How is it used?

What is Gaspan and what is it used for?

Herbal medicinal product for the treatment of gastrointestinal complaints, especially for mild cramps, flatulence, a feeling of fullness and abdominal pain.

Gaspan is used in adults and adolescents aged 12 years and over.

What should you consider before taking it?

What should you consider before taking Gaspan?

Gaspan must not be taken,

if you are allergic to peppermint oil, caraway oil, menthol or any of the other ingredients of this medicine listed in section 6.

Warnings and precautions

Please talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking Gaspan.

The capsules must be swallowed whole, i.e. they must not be broken or chewed, otherwise the peppermint oil will be released prematurely. This could lead to local irritation in the mouth and oesophagus.
In patients who already suffer from heartburn or a diaphragmatic hernia, this symptom sometimes worsens after taking peppermint oil. In this case, treatment should be discontinued.

If unexplained abdominal pain persists or worsens for more than two weeks or occurs together with symptoms such as fever, jaundice, vomiting or blood in the stool, a doctor should be consulted immediately.

Children

There is insufficient data on the use in children aged 8 to 11 years.

Taking Gaspan with other medicines

Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking/using, have recently taken/used or intend to take/use any other medicines.

Studies on interactions with other medicines have not been carried out.

Medicines to reduce stomach acid such as H2 antihistamines, proton pump inhibitors or antacids can lead to premature dissolution of the enteric-coated capsule coating and thus possibly to belching with a typical smell and/or stomach irritation. Therefore, simultaneous intake should be avoided.

If simultaneous intake is medically necessary, Gaspan should be taken at least 2 hours before antacids or other medicines to reduce stomach acid.

Taking Gaspan with food and drink

Since the enteric-coated capsule coating can dissolve prematurely when taken with food, Gaspan should be taken at least 30 minutes before meals.

Pregnancy and breast-feeding

Pregnancy

There is no or very limited experience with the use of peppermint oil and/or caraway oil in pregnant women. The use of Gaspan during pregnancy is not recommended.

Breast-feeding

Clinical data have shown that 1.8-cineole, a component of peppermint oil, can pass into breast milk in humans. A risk to the newborn/infant cannot be excluded. The use of Gaspan during breast-feeding is not recommended.

Driving and using machines

No studies on the effects on the ability to drive and use machines have been performed.

Gaspan contains sorbitol and sodium

Gaspan contains up to 11 mg sorbitol per capsule.
This medicine contains less than 1 mmol (23 mg) sodium per capsule, i.e. it is virtually "sodium-free".
