1. What is Hylak forte and what is it used for?

Hylak forte contains the metabolic products of the natural intestinal germs Lactobacillus helveticus, Lactobacillus acidophilus, Escherichia coli and Streptococcus faecalis in a germ-free, concentrated form.
In the healthy intestine, especially in certain intestinal sections (ileum, colon and rectum), various natural bacteria are located, such as Lactobacillus (lactic acid bacteria), Escherichia coli and Streptococcus faecalis (so-called physiological intestinal flora).
The task of these microorganisms is to participate in the biological utilisation of food and thus support digestion.
On the other hand, the intestinal germs, e.g. through lactic acid formation, impair the growth conditions for pathogens, inhibit the production of harmful metabolic products of the bacteria and prevent their penetration into the body.
In addition, the intestinal bacteria play a role in the formation of vitamins (vitamin B6, B12 and K).
Due to external influences, such as antibiotic or radiation treatment, certain stomach operations (Billroth II), but also as a result of poor and unusual eating and nutritional behaviour, the necessary natural colonisation of germs in the intestine can be severely disrupted and, under certain circumstances, an overgrowth with pathogens can occur.
The resulting symptoms, such as a feeling of fullness, flatulence, diarrhoea or constipation, characterise the disturbed biological balance of the naturally occurring intestinal germs.

For their existence, the bacteria require a certain living environment with precisely coordinated acid conditions in the gastrointestinal tract.
The biosynthetic lactic acid contained in Hylak forte contributes to the adjustment of these acid values. In this way, the digestive process is favourably influenced (e.g. in the absence of hydrochloric acid in the gastric juice and digestive disorders due to fermentation or putrefaction processes) and the pathogens are deprived of their livelihood.

With the supply of the metabolic products of natural intestinal germs contained in Hylak forte, the normal functions of the intestinal mucosa can be maintained and thus the recolonisation of intestinal bacteria can be promoted.

Hylak forte is used for:
general digestive problems, such as flatulence, diarrhoea, constipation;
during and after antibiotic, sulphonamide and radiation treatment;
disorders in liver metabolism;
acid deficiency-related problems in the gastrointestinal tract;
chronic atrophic gastrointestinal inflammation ("ageing intestine")
gastrointestinal disorders caused by climate change (especially when travelling to warmer countries);
chronic poisoning caused by the intestine, resulting in symptoms such as nausea, circulatory disorders, mild fatigue, etc.;
chronic allergic skin diseases such as inflammatory rashes (eczema) or hives (urticaria).

Other information:
The use of this medicine is only supportive and, in the event of illness, may only be used as a supplement to other effective therapeutic measures. In particular, in the case of diarrhoeal diseases, Hylak forte does not replace the necessary treatment for fluid replacement and other measures such as the temporary avoidance of solid food ("tea break").

What should you consider before taking it?

What should you consider before taking Hylak forte?

Hylak forte must not be taken,

• if you are allergic to the active ingredients or any of the other ingredients listed in section 6 of this medicine
• by children under 2 years of age
• in acute diarrhoea with high fever and blood impurities

Warnings and precautions
Please talk to your pharmacist before taking Hylak forte.

In the following cases, a doctor should be consulted:

• if you experience more severe symptoms, such as acute diarrhoea with high fever or blood impurities,
• if the diarrhoea lasts for more than 2 days,
• if you suffer from other, longer-lasting or unclear symptoms in the gastrointestinal tract.

In principle, a doctor should be consulted in the case of diarrhoea that lasts for more than 2 days, shows blood impurities or is accompanied by fever and circulatory disorders.



In the case of diarrhoeal diseases, attention must be paid to the replacement of fluid and electrolytes as the most important therapeutic measure, especially in children and the elderly.


Taking Hylak forte with other medicines
Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking/using, have recently taken/used or intend to take/use any other medicines.

The simultaneous intake with antacids (medicines for the treatment of stomach/intestinal ulcers) should be avoided.

Taking Hylak forte with food and drink

Hylak forte should not be taken with milk or milk products, as these could curdle.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding
If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or if you suspect you may be pregnant or intend to become pregnant, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking this medicine.

The possible risk to humans is not known, as there is no data on the use of Hylak forte in pregnant and breastfeeding women.

Hylak forte contains lactose
Please only take this medicine after consulting your doctor if you know that you suffer from a sugar intolerance.

Hylak forte contains sodium
This medicine contains less than 1 mmol sodium (23 mg) per ml solution, i.e. it is virtually “sodium-free”.

How should the medicine be taken?

How should Hylak forte be taken?

Always take this medicine exactly as described in this leaflet or exactly as directed by your doctor or pharmacist. Check with your doctor or pharmacist if you are not sure.

Dosage:
Adults and adolescents from 12 years of age: initially 40 - 60 drops 3 times a day.
Children from the age of 2: initially 20 - 40 drops 3 times a day.
Once the acute symptoms have subsided, the dose can be reduced by half.

In people with known increased gastric acid production and often associated heartburn, it is advisable to divide the daily dose into more than 3 individual doses.

Method of administration:
Shake the bottle before use.

Take the drops in a little liquid (e.g. water, tea, orange juice, but not in milk, see section “Taking Hylak forte with food and drink”) before or during meals.



The duration of taking Hylak forte is in principle not limited.

If you forget to take Hylak forte

Do not take double the amount if you have forgotten the previous dose.
Instead, simply take the usual next dose at the usual time.

1 ml solution contains aqueous substrate of the metabolic products of the natural intestinal germs:

Escherichia coli DSM 4087	249.481 mg
Streptococcus faecalis DSM 4086	124.741 mg

and aqueous concentrate of the metabolic products of the natural intestinal germs:
Lactobacillus helveticus DSM 4183	498.960 mg

1 ml solution corresponds to the biosynthetic active ingredients of 100 million germs.

1 drop corresponds to 0.05 ml solution.

- The other ingredients are:
Sodium monohydrogen phosphate x 7 H2O, potassium monohydrogen phosphate, lactic acid 90%, phosphoric acid 85%, potassium sorbate, citric acid monohydrate, lactose (milk sugar).

Hylak forte is a clear, yellowish-brown solution for oral administration with a characteristic caramel-like odour and acidic taste.

pH value: 3.0 – 3.4.
