Origin
Lemongrass originates from Southeast Asia, especially Vietnam, Thailand and Indonesia.
Season
Lemongrass is available all year round from Asia – especially Thailand – to Austria.
Taste
The essential oil in lemongrass gives the exotic herb a slightly lemony taste, which remains rather in the background and adapts discreetly to other spices and flavours.
Varieties
Around 55 species are known in Asia. The most commonly cultivated are East Indian and West Indian lemongrass. Only the stalks of the bushy, preferably young and tender plant are used for cooking.
Storage recommendation
Store fresh herbs in an airtight container or a tightly sealed freezer bag in the refrigerator to preserve their freshness.
Tip: Wrap the herbs in damp kitchen paper before storing them to keep them fresh for longer.
