What is Microlax and what is it used for?

In constipation, the intestinal contents accumulate in the rectum and much of the water is extracted. The stool becomes hard and dry. Even hard chairs, however, still contain a relatively large amount of water. This is where the effect of Microlax comes in. The water bound in the hardened stool is released, which causes the thickened stool to soften so that the bowel can be emptied easily and without discomfort.
Microlax acts directly on the stool and not on the bowel wall, i.e. there is no irritation of the bowel mucosa. It is not absorbed through the intestinal mucosa. Any excess is excreted with the stool, which means that no delayed bowel movements occur.
Gentle emptying occurs within 5 to 20 minutes.
Microlax is used
for constipation in the rectal area in adults and children, as is the case with
chronically suppressed urge to defecate (travel, occupation)
certain diseases, e.g. multiple sclerosis, morbidity.
certain diseases, e.g. multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease
unbalanced diet (low-fibre food, lack of fluids)
psychological disorders, stress, depression, etc.

What should you pay attention to before taking it?

What precautions should you take before using Microlax?
Microlax must not be used,
if you are allergic to sodium citrate, dodecyl (sulfoacetate) sodium salt, sorbitol or any of the other ingredients listed in section 6. This medicine may not be used if you are allergic to sodium citrate, dodecyl(sulfoacetate) sodium salt, sorbitol or any of the other ingredients listed in section 6.
Warnings and precautions
Please talk to your pharmacist or healthcare professional before using Microlax.
To prevent risk of injury, Microlax should be used with caution in patients with haemorrhoids, bowel infections and anal bleeding.
Abdominal pain, bleeding in the gastrointestinal tract, bowel obstruction are restrictions of use. If you have an intestinal infection, you should only use Microlax after consulting your doctor.
If your symptoms persist for a long time, please stop treatment and seek medical advice.

Children
In children under 3 years of age, insert tube neck only halfway.

Use of Microlax with other medicines
Inform your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking/using, have recently taken/used or do not intend to take/use any other medicines.

Due to the risk of damage to the intestinal wall, Microlax should not be used concomitantly with oral or rectal exchange resins for the treatment of elevated serum potassium levels because of its sorbitol content.
Pregnancy and breast-feeding
If you are pregnant or breast-feeding, or if you suspect you may be pregnant or intend to become pregnant, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before using this medicine.
Microlax may be used during pregnancy and breast-feeding.
Driving and ability to operate machinery
Microlax has no effect on driving or operating machinery.

Microlax contains sorbic acid as a preservative and may therefore cause local skin irritation (e.g. contact dermatitis)

How should the medicine be taken?

How to use Microlax?

Always use this medicine exactly as described in this leaflet or as agreed with your doctor or pharmacist. Check with your doctor or pharmacist if you are unsure.

Microlax is a single-use ready-to-use enema for rectal use:
1. Hold the tube by the lower neck and pull off the cap with a slight twist.
2. To facilitate insertion of the tube neck, squeeze out a drop to moisten the tip and disperse the drop.
3. In adults, the neck of the tube should be inserted completely into the rectum.
4. The tube is squeezed firmly to empty the contents into the rectum.
5. To avoid reflux of solution into the tube, the tube must remain squeezed until completely removed from the rectum.
Microlax can be administered in the posture most comfortable to the patient, it is not necessary to lie down during the 5 minute dwell time which should be observed.Adults, adolescents and children over 3 years of age apply one tube as required. In stubborn cases, a second tube may be necessary.
Use in children under 3 years of age

In children under 3 years of age, use only half a tube and insert the neck of the tube only halfway into the rectum (see marking on the neck of the tube).
If only part of the enema contents are used, discard the remaining rectal solution.

What Microlax contains
- The active ingredients are: Sodium citrate , dodecyl(sulfoacetate) sodium salt and sorbitol.
1 tube of 5 ml contains 450 mg sodium citrate, 45 mg dodecyl(sulfoacetate) sodium salt and 3125 mg sorbitol
- The other ingredients are: Glycerol, sorbic acid and purified water.
