What are Strepsils lozenges and what are they used for?

Strepsils lozenges contain flurbiprofen. Flurbiprofen is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug). with analgesic, antipyretic and anti-inflammatory properties.

Strepsils Lozenges is used for the short-term relief of symptoms of sore throat such as inflammation of the throat lining, pain and swelling, and difficulty swallowing in adults and children aged 12 years and over.

Contact a doctor if symptoms get worse or do not improve after 3 days.

How is it applied?

What are Strepsils lozenges and what are they used for?

Strepsils lozenges contain flurbiprofen. Flurbiprofen is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) with analgesic, antipyretic and anti-inflammatory properties.

Strepsils lozenges are used for a short time to relieve the symptoms of sore throats such as inflammation of the throat lining, pain and swelling, and for difficulty swallowing in adults and children aged 12 and over.

What should you pay attention to before taking it?

What should you be aware of before using Strepsils Lozenges?

Strepsils Lozenges must not be used if you

- are allergic to flurbiprofen, levomenthol or any of the other ingredients of this medicine listed in section 6.
- ever had asthma, unexpected whistling breathing or shortness of breath, an irritated nose, swelling of the face or an itchy skin rash (hives) after taking acetylsalicylic acid or any other NSAID.
- have or have ever had two or more occurrences of stomach ulcers, intestinal ulcers or bleeding in the stomach/intestinal area.
- have previously suffered from bleeding or ruptures in the stomach/intestinal area, severe colitis or blood disorders after taking NSAIDs.
- Take acetylsalicylic acid in high doses or other NSAIDs (such as celecoxib, ibuprofen, diclofenac sodium, etc.).
- are in the last three months of pregnancy.
- Have or have ever had heart disease, severe kidney disease or severe liver disease.

Warnings and precautions

Please talk to your doctor or pharmacist before using Strepsils Lozenges
if you:
- ever had asthma or suffer from allergies
- have inflamed tonsils (tonsillitis) or think you have a bacterial throat infection (because they may need antibiotics)
- have heart, kidney or liver problems.
- have had a stroke
- have a history of bowel disease (ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease)
- suffer from a chronic autoimmune disease such as systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) or mixed connective tissue disease.
- are older, as it is more likely that you may be affected by the side effects listed in this leaflet.
- during the first 6 months of pregnancy or while breast-feeding are

During the use of Strepsils Lozenges

.- Stop using the lozenges at the first signs of skin reactions (rash, peeling of the skin, blistering) or other signs of an allergic reaction and seek medical advice immediately.
- Inform your doctor if you have any unusual symptoms in your abdomen (especially bleeding).
- Talk to a doctor if you do not feel better, get worse or have new symptoms.
- The use of medicines such as Strepsils lozenges, may be associated with a slightly increased risk of heart attack (heart attack) or stroke. Any risk is more likely with high doses and longer treatment. Do not exceed the recommended dose or duration of treatment (see section 3).

Children


This medicine should not be used in children under 12 years of age.

Use Strepsils Lozenges with other medicines

Please tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking/using, have recently taken/used or do not intend to take/use any other medicines.

This applies in particular to the following medicines:
- low doses of acetylsalicylic acid (up to 75 mg daily)
- medicines for high blood pressure or heart failure (antihypertensives, cardiac glycosides)
- dehydration tablets (diuretics, including potassium-saving medicines)
- blood-thinning medicines (anticoagulants, thrombocyte inhibitors)
.(anticoagulants, thrombocyte agitation inhibitors)
- Medicines for gout (probenecid, sulfinpyrazone)
- Other NSAIDs or corticosteroids (such as e.g. corticosteroids)
- Medicines for high blood pressure or heart weakness (antihypertensives, cardiac glycosides).B. (such as celecoxib, ibuprofen, diclofenac sodium or prednisolone)
- Mifepristone (a medicine used to terminate a pregnancy)
- Quinolone antibiotics (such as ciprofloxacin)
- Cyclosporine or tacrolimus (used to suppress the immune system)
- Other medicines for gout (probenecid, sulfinpyrazone)
- Other corticosteroids (such as celecoxib, ibuprofen, diclofenac sodium or prednisolone)
- Phenytoin (used to treat epilepsy)
- Methotrexate (used to treat cancer)
- Lithium or selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) (used to treat depression)
- Antidiabetic medicines used to treat depression

- Zidovudine (used to treat HIV)

Use Strepsils with food, drink and alcohol

Use of Strepsils lozenges with food, drink and alcohol

During treatment with Strepsils lozenges, the consumption of alcohol should be avoided as this may increase the risk of stomach or intestinal bleeding.

Pregnancy, lactation and fertility:

Do not use this medicine if you are in the last 3 months of pregnancy. If you are in the first 6 months of pregnancy or breastfeeding, talk to your doctor before using this medicine.

Flrubiprofen belongs to a group of medicines that can affect fertility in women. This effect is reversible if the use of the medicinal product is stopped. It is unlikely that the occasional use of this medicine will affect the possibility of becoming pregnant. However, talk to your doctor before using this medicine if you have problems getting pregnant.

Trafficability and ability to operate machinery

No studies on the effect on trafficability and ability to operate machinery are available. However, dizziness and visual disturbances are possible side effects after taking NSAIDs. Do not drive or operate machinery if you are affected.

Strepsils contains glucose and sucrose

Strepsils lozenges contain 1.407 g sucrose (sugar), 1.069 g glucose and 0.05 g honey per dose.

Please use this medicine only after consulting your doctor if you are known to have a sugar intolerance.

How should the medicine be taken?

How to use Strepsils lozenges?

Always use this medicine exactly as described in this leaflet or as your doctor or pharmacist has told you. Check with your doctor or pharmacist if you are not quite sure.

Recommended dosage: For adults and children from 12 years.


- Take 1 lozenge and let it slowly melt in your mouth.
- Keep moving the lozenge around in your mouth while sucking.
- The lozenge should start working within 30 minutes.
- Thereafter, take 1 lozenge every 3 to 6 hours if necessary.
- Do not take more than 5 lozenges in 24 hours.
Do not use on children under 12 years of age.

These lozenges are intended for short-term use only.

You should only use as many lozenges as you need over the shortest possible period to relieve your symptoms. If irritation occurs in the mouth, treatment with flurbiprofen should be discontinued.
Do not use Strepsils for more than 3 days unless prescribed by your doctor. If you do not feel better or even worse, or if new symptoms occur, talk to a doctor or pharmacist.

If you have used more Strepsils Lozenges than you should

Talk to your doctor or pharmacist or go to the nearest hospital immediately. Complaints of an overdose may include nausea or vomiting,
stomach pain or, rarely, diarrhoea. Ringing in the ears, headaches and gastrointestinal bleeding are also possible.

If you have any further questions on the use of this medicine, ask your doctor or pharmacist.

If you forget to use Strepsils lozenges

Do not use a double dose if you have forgotten to use it before.

What Strepsils lozenges contain

The active substance (which is responsible for making the medicine work) is flurbiprofen 8.75 mg.
The other ingredients are: Macrogol 300, potassium hydroxide, lemon flavouring, levomenthol, honey, liquid glucose and liquid sucrose.

How Strepsils lozenges look and contents of the pack

Round, pale yellow, milky lozenges with an imprint on both sides.

The pack contains 8, 16, 24 or 36 lozenges.

Not all pack sizes may be placed on the market.
