The tiny cherry tomatoes are often mistakenly called cocktail tomatoes. Although these two tomato varieties are extremely similar at first glance, there are differences: the cherry tomatoes are usually a touch sweeter than the cocktail tomatoes and also smaller. Because they resemble cherries due to their size, they are often also called cherry tomatoes.
Cherry tomatoes can be bought all year round, but they taste best in late summer. The fruits are even more flavourful if they are home-grown. This also has the advantage that freshly harvested fruit has a higher content of healthy ingredients, as this decreases over time. Cherry tomatoes are generally cultivated as annual plants, but there are now some varieties that are perennial. The cultivation and care hardly differ from that of conventional tomato varieties.
