The red dragon fruit or pitahaya fruit grows on a curious cactus with long, triangular shoots and branches. The fruit itself is also bizarrely exotic in appearance. It is oval to ovoid, about 10 cm long. There are cactus-like bulges and outgrowths on the yellow skin. The whitish gelatinous flesh contains - evenly distributed - countless black seeds. The pitahaya, of which there is also a red-coloured variety (dragon fruit), tastes refreshing and uniquely aromatic. It is believed to follow in the footsteps of the well-known exotics mango, pineapple, etc.
.Origin
The yellow pitahaya is native to the tropics and subtropics of South America. The main cultivation area is Colombia, where it is grown from the coast to high altitudes. Colombia supplies them from December to March and in July/August. The red pitahaya reaches us mainly from Thailand and Israel.IngredientsSince a pitahaya consists of 90% water, you can enjoy it without remorse. Eaten in large quantities, pitahayas can have a digestive effect.
Tips
Pitahayas can be kept in a cool place for up to 12 days.
Preparation
The pitahaya is an ideal fresh fruit; it only develops its unique, sweet and refreshing aroma when raw. To eat, cut the pitahaya lengthwise and spoon out the flesh. This delicious fruit is also excellent for fruit salads. Their curious appearance also makes pitahayas ideal for decorating and buffets.
