The banana tree can grow to a height of 3-6 metres, with a leaf crown up to 7 metres in diameter. The banana is harvested green, then shipped and only ripened in ripening chambers in the importing country. When the banana is yellow, with slightly greenish tips, it is ready to eat and has developed its typical, full aroma.
Origin
The banana is one of the oldest cultivated plants in the world, but it was only introduced to Europe in 1885. Their home is Asia. Today, the most important growing countries are Brazil, India and Thailand. However, the main export countries are Ecuador, Costa Rica, Colombia, Honduras, Panama, Côte d'Ivoire, Guadeloupe and Martinique. Thanks to the tropical climate, bananas can be harvested all year round and are therefore always in season.
Tips
Bananas are ideal sources of energy. They are excellent as a snack because they contain different types of sugar (glucose, fructose and sucrose). Each type of sugar is released in the body at a different time. Thus, a ripe banana provides continuous energy. This effect is enhanced by their content of pectins, highly swelling dietary fibres. Pectins cause a longer retention time in the stomach and a lasting feeling of satiety. Bananas are also a valuable part of the diet for people with high cholesterol, high blood lipids, high uric acid levels and gout.
Preparation
The banana, with its appetisingly fresh flesh, is the ideal fruit for a wholesome diet. Whether sweet, hearty, sour, exotic or savoury, bananas can be combined with almost any dish. The mild sweetness of the banana lends itself to the most unusual combinations and thus offers a multi-faceted taste experience.
