Mucopolysaccharide polysulphuric acid ester, the active ingredient of Hirudoid Ointment, has an anti-inflammatory effect.
Application
1. WHAT IS HIRUDOID OINTMENT AND WHAT IS IT USED FOR?
Mucopolysaccharide polysulphuric acid ester, the active ingredient of Hirudoid, has an anti-inflammatory effect. It prevents the formation and promotes the regression of superficial blood clots, bruises and swellings and promotes the regeneration of connective tissue.
Hirudoid Ointment is used for the local treatment of:
- blunt injuries with or without bruising
- inflammation of superficial veins, provided that these cannot be treated by compression.

Mucopolysaccharide polysulphuric acid ester, the active ingredient of Hirudoid Ointment, has an anti-inflammatory effect. It prevents the formation and promotes the regression of superficial blood clots, bruises and swellings and promotes the regeneration of connective tissue.
Hirudoid Ointment is used for the local treatment of:
- blunt injuries with or without bruising
- inflammation of superficial veins, provided that these cannot be treated by compression
What should you consider before taking it?
What should you consider before using Hirudoid Ointment?
Hirudoid Ointment must not be used,
- if you are allergic to mucopolysaccharide polysulphuric acid ester or any of the other ingredients of this medicine listed in section 6.
- on open wounds, inflammations, in purulent processes or infections of the skin.
- on the eye and on mucous membranes.
Warnings and precautions
Please talk to your doctor or pharmacist before using Hirudoid Ointment.
If the symptoms persist or if the expected success is not achieved by the application, medical advice is required as soon as possible.
When using Hirudoid Ointment together with other medicines
Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking / using, have recently taken / used or intend to take / use any other medicines.
Pregnancy and breast-feeding
The use of the preparation during pregnancy and breast-feeding is possible.
Driving and using machines
So far, no effects on driving and using machines are known.
Hirudoid Ointment contains methyl-4-hydroxybenzoate, propyl-4-hydroxybenzoate, cetyl stearyl alcohol and wool wax
Methyl-4-hydroxybenzoate and propyl-4-hydroxybenzoate can cause allergic reactions, including delayed reactions.
Cetyl stearyl alcohol and wool wax can cause local skin irritation (e.g. contact dermatitis).
How should the medicine be taken?
How to use Hirudoid Ointment?
To open the tube for the first time, pierce the aluminium foil at the opening with the spike embedded in the tube cap!
A strip of ointment 3 - 5 cm long (more if necessary) is applied to the affected area once or several times a day.
The treatment usually lasts up to 10 days for blunt trauma and 1-2 weeks for superficial phlebitis.
Hirudoid Ointment is also suitable for physical treatment methods, such as phonophoresis.
Use in children and adolescents
There is insufficient experience in children and adolescents. Therefore, use in this age group is not recommended.

This medicine does not require any special storage conditions.
Keep this medicine out of the reach of children.
Do not use this medicine after the expiry date which is stated on the carton. The expiry date refers to the last day of the month.

5. HOW TO STORE HIRUDOID OINTMENT?
Keep out of reach of children.
Do not use Hirudoid Ointment after the expiry date which is stated on the carton. The expiry date refers to the last day of the month.

What Hirudoid Ointment contains
- The active ingredient is mucopolysaccharide polysulphuric acid ester. 100 g of ointment contain: mucopolysaccharide polysulphuric acid ester 0.3 g (organo-heparinoid "Luitpold") corresponding to 25,000 U.* * Units determined by the activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT).
- The other ingredients are: methyl-4-hydroxybenzoate 0.16 g, propyl-4-hydroxybenzoate 0.04 g, glycerol, stearic acid 50, wool wax alcohol ointment, cetyl stearyl alcohol, myristyl alcohol, isopropanol, thymol, potassium hydroxide, purified water.
What Hirudoid Ointment looks like and contents of the pack
Hirudoid Ointment is a so-called oil in water ointment. The ointment is white, shiny and homogeneous with a characteristic odour.
Pack sizes:
Packs of 40 g, 100 g, 10 x 40 g, 10 x 100 g in aluminium tubes.
Not all pack sizes may be marketed.
