The mangosteen is a queen of fruits. The pulp tastes refreshing, mildly sweet and sour, and melts on the tongue. Mangosteens grow on 12-15 m high trees. The round, flattened fruit is violet, wine red to brownish red in color. The skin is thick, firm and leathery. The pulp consists of four to seven mandarin-like segments with edible green kernels.
Origin
The home of the mangosteen is the island world of the Malay Archipelago. It is cultivated in Southeast Asian countries, Central America and Brazil. The fruits are about the size of a small orange, are spherical and have a firm, leathery, reddish-brown to blue outer skin that is up to 8mm thick.
Tips
Caution, when cutting open the peel, a juice escapes that causes purple stains that are difficult to remove!
Preparation
First and foremost, the mangosteen is suitable for fresh consumption. It is recommended to consume the fruit, which is divided into pulp segments, well chilled, together with the kernels. Similar to kiwis, mangosteens can be used in many ways: for desserts, meat dishes, spice sauces or in puddings, creams, ice cream or cocktails.
