Heartedly loved by children and Mother Nature.
A golden, crispy breading and a tender, juicy pollock. Our followfish fish fingers in organic breading are popular with young and old for a reason. And there is much more than "just" enjoyment in these little treats.
Here we would like to tell you the story about our MSC fish fingers. How we ensure that the fish comes from sustainable catches and what happens until it finally lies in the pack as a popular fish finger with nine or 14 other "colleagues".
Where the fish comes from
.
The Alaska pollock for our fish fingers comes from FAO catch area 67, which is the Northeast Pacific - more precisely the Gulf of Alaska and the Eastern Bering Sea. The Alaska pollock fisheries there are pioneers in sustainability. They were one of the first fisheries in the world to receive the MSC label for sustainable operations back in 2005. In this fishing area, the stocks are in very good condition. Moreover, the fishery is very selective. This means that there is hardly any by-catch - on average 98% of the catch consists of the target species, Alaska pollock. This fish is a so-called semipelagic schooling fish. This means that it lives and feeds close to the ground. To protect the fragile seabed, our fishermen use pelagic otter trawls. These are pulled through the free water close to the bottom - ground contact is avoided as far as possible.
How can this be controlled? Echo sonar sensors are attached to the nets to report the distance to the seabed and the exact position of the nets so that the crew can steer the nets accordingly and maintain sufficient distance from the bottom. To ensure that everything is above board, the fishermen are strictly monitored by state authorities. Controls take place at the ports, but each fishing trip is additionally accompanied by state fishery observers.
With the tracking code on every pack of our fish fingers and on all other products, it is possible to track exactly where the fish was caught or the vegetables were harvested.
Preparation note
Enjoy only when cooked through.
In the frying pan: Heat the oil in the pan and fry the fish fingers, unfrozen, over a medium heat for approx. 5-8 min. until golden brown, turning them several times.
In the oven: Preheat the oven to 220°C (gas mark 4-5). Bake the fish fingers unthawed (fan oven: middle rack 12-15 min., top/bottom heat: top rack 15-18 min.). After 10 minutes, turn the fish fingers over once.
Fryer: Heat oil to 170°C. Place the frozen fish fingers in the deep-frying basket and fry for approx. 5 minutes until golden brown.
Recipe inspiration: The sustainable followfood and followfish products can be used in many ways in the kitchen. Whether simply plain with bread, grilled, steamed, as a bowl, for a picnic or for a festive menu with the family. There are no limits to what you can do. How the fish becomes a fish finger
.
While still at sea, the catch is processed and frozen in blocks. This means maximum freshness. The frozen goods are then delivered by container ship to our processor in Bremerhaven. Here, the sticks are cut from the frozen fish, breaded and then pre-fried for you in organic sunflower oil. At home, the little treats in crispy organic breading can thus be prepared quickly and easily in the pan or even in the oven. And with it, for example, there is a cheerful green pea-broccoli puree.
We are pleased that children and parents, but also all other lovers of fish fingers, put their trust in us. In the July issue of ÖKO TEST magazine, followfish fish fingers were also rated "very good".
All this together confirms our daily actions - for our fans from young to young-at-heart and for our environment.
About the manufacturer:
At last, enjoy with a clear conscience again!
followfood and followfish do not see themselves as a brand, but as a movement.
We want change. To 100% organic farming and 100% sustainable fishing.
We have been a sustainability pioneer in Germany for over 10 years. With hand-fished and fair-trade certified tuna, with MSC-certified wild fish products, farmed fish only from organic aquacultures and all other ingredients and products purely from organic farming, all free from additives and genetic engineering. We are committed to healthy soils, are constantly reducing our CO2 emissions and will be a 100% climate-neutral company from 2021. We research more sustainable packaging solutions, support
protection projects, fish plastic bottles out of the oceans. And with each new product we go one step further.
Everything sustainable and traceable: We believe that consumers want to know where the products they eat come from. That is why there is a tracking code on each of our packages. This means that every product can be traced back to its origin. Maximum transparency. Simply enter the printed code on followfood.co.uk and find out all about the product.
followfish fishing guidelines:
The big vision that was the impetus to found followfish in the first place in 2007: Stop overfishing and save the oceans! This is just as relevant today as it was then. More than 30% of the fish stocks are overfished, almost 60% are so intensively fished that only minimally stronger fishing would lead to an overfishing situation. Fish consumption is increasing every year. Sustainable fisheries do too, but unfortunately not as quickly as necessary. Fishing without sustainability is a dead end and can never be a solution to food issues of sustainable nutrition. Fishing more than grows back may have an economic advantage for one year, but it destroys the livelihoods of future years.
The MSC is a minimum standard for us.
Since legislators - i.e. governments - are failing globally to manage fisheries so that they function sustainably, the WWF, among others, founded the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) 24 years ago, the "Council to Save the Seas". The MSC rewards sustainable fisheries with certification. Even though it seems that a lot of fish is already MSC-certified in this country, only 15 percent of fisheries worldwide meet the 35 sustainability criteria of the MSC.
For us, the MSC is a minimum standard for all our fisheries. This is because he is pursuing the goal of trimming global fisheries systems to sustainability as quickly as possible. This forces him to make compromises.
followfish has a different goal: As a beacon brand, we want to bring the world's most sustainable fish products to the market
