Our organic avocados are of the Bacon variety.
Organic avocados are large, have an intense nutty flavor, and are high in oil content.
Tip
Organic avocados ripen differently than conventional avocados. They come from the tree less evenly and have a shorter shelf life when fully ripe... so they are "only" pre-ripened and a little harder than usual.
If you want to enjoy your avocado "softer", wrap it in newspaper and store it at room temperature for 1-3 days so that the fruit can ripen.
General
The skin of the pear-shaped fruit is colored light to dark green to almost black, depending on the variety, and is smooth, wrinkled, or warty. The mostly pale green flesh encloses a brown, inedible core. The taste of the creamy flesh is mild, smooth, and with a nutty aroma.
Origin
Brought to Europe by the Spanish conquistador Cortez in the 16th century, avocados are now grown in almost all tropical and subtropical countries and are available in our markets all year round. The Hass variety is particularly recommended. Under the warty, almost black skin hides a particularly delicious flesh that is typical of the variety.
Tips
Avocados are only suitable for consumption when ripe. A fully ripe avocado feels soft, and the flesh can be spread "like butter". Firm fruits can be ripened at room temperature, wrapped in newspaper. Since the flesh of a cut avocado quickly turns brown, the cut surfaces should be drizzled with lemon or lime juice immediately.
Preparation
Due to its nutty, very mild flavor, the avocado harmonizes with many ingredients - from spicy to piquant, from sweet to sour. To eat, avocados are cut lengthwise all around, the two halves are separated by twisting them apart, and the core is removed. Avocados offer a wide variety of preparation options: savory as a spread on bread, piquant filled with crab, blue cheese, vinaigrette, etc., as a soup (always add avocados at the end and do not boil), in salads, and as a sweet dessert.
Insider tip: Spoon and try your avocado with honey ;-)
Storage recommendation
Avocados are ethylene-producing fruits and should not be stored in the refrigerator. It is important to store them separately from other fruits and vegetables, as they can spoil more quickly otherwise. When buying unripe avocados, the ripening process can be accelerated by storing them together with an apple in a paper bag at room temperature.
