Application
1. What is Chlorhexamed Fluid and what is it used for?
Chlorhexamed Fluid is a 0.1% chlorhexidine solution.
Chlorhexamed Fluid is a surface-active mouth and throat antiseptic (disinfectant) with a broad spectrum of activity and long-term effect against bacterial pathogens and a somewhat weaker activity against fungal diseases.
Rinsing with Chlorhexamed Fluid effectively treats bacterial infections in the mouth and throat.
Chlorhexamed Fluid is used to treat and prevent bacterial infections in the mouth and throat and is indicated
to reduce and prevent bacterial plaque (plaque);
for the treatment of simple to purulent gingivitis (gingivitis);
for the treatment or prevention of infectious diseases of the periodontium and their sequelae (periodontal diseases);
in tonsillitis (tonsillitis), angina, lateral pharyngitis, pharyngitis (pharyngitis);
in injuries as well as before and after surgical interventions in the mouth and throat (e.g. before and after tonsillectomy and dental surgery), as Chlorhexamed Fluid improves the healing process;
in aphthae (painful inflamed areas of the mucous membrane of the gums, oral cavity or tongue), oral mucosal inflammation such as stomatitis (especially under prostheses) and inflammation of the tongue (glossitis). In severe fungal disease of the oral mucosa (thrush), additional therapy with special agents against fungal diseases will occasionally be necessary;
to eliminate bad breath when normal oral hygiene is not possible and bad breath is not caused by a stomach disease;
for oral hygiene when normal oral hygiene (tooth brushing) is not possible, e.g. in severe general diseases and patients in intensive care.
Special application notes in dental practice:
Reduction of germs in the patient's oral cavity by application before treatment to protect the treating physician;
in infected tooth sockets after tooth extraction.

Warnings and precautions
Please talk to your doctor or pharmacist before using Chlorhexamed fluid.
Use Chlorhexamed fluid only in the mouth! Chlorhexamed fluid must not get into the eyes and ears. In case of accidental contact with the eye, eye area or
ear canal, rinse thoroughly with plenty of water.
Chlorhexamed fluid should not be swallowed. The use of Chlorhexamed fluid does not replace tooth brushing.
Constant rinsing of the oral cavity with Chlorhexamed fluid without brushing teeth can promote gum bleeding.
Chlorhexamed fluid should not be used for more than 3 weeks without interruption without medical advice, as prolonged use can lead to discoloration of the tongue and teeth and taste disturbances.
In special cases, e.g. in intensive care for the manually disabled, preventive treatment can also be carried out over a longer period of time.
Any discoloration of teeth, tongue, fillings and dentures can be largely prevented: Brush your
teeth with a normal toothpaste for at least 5 minutes before using Chlorhexamed fluid. Rinse your mouth thoroughly with water between brushing your teeth and using Chlorhexamed fluid (see "Using Chlorhexamed fluid with other medicines"). If necessary, reduce your consumption of strongly coloring foods and drinks, such as tea, coffee and red wine. Also clean dentures with a commercially available denture cleaner before using Chlorhexamed. Any discoloration that does occur can be removed over time by intensive brushing. In stubborn cases, professional cleaning by the dentist, in the case of full dentures by a special cleaner.
Stop using Chlorhexamed fluid and tell your doctor if you have pain or irritation in your mouth.
Stop using Chlorhexamed fluid and seek medical help immediately if you develop a rash, swelling of the lips, tongue, throat or face, or if you have difficulty breathing.
If the symptoms persist or if the expected success is not achieved by the application, a doctor must be consulted.
Using Chlorhexamed fluid with other medicines
Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking/using, have recently taken/used or plan to take/use any other medicines.
Chlorhexamed fluid is impaired in its effect by anionic substances, which are usually a component of common toothpastes. Therefore, do not use them at the same time, but at least five minutes before rinsing your mouth with Chlorhexamed fluid (rinse your mouth thoroughly with water between brushing your teeth and using Chlorhexamed fluid).
Using Chlorhexamed fluid with food and drink
Do not eat or drink sugary foods and drinks immediately after using Chlorhexamed fluid, as these can otherwise impair the effect of Chlorhexamed fluid.
Pregnancy, breastfeeding and fertility
If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or if you suspect you may be pregnant or are planning to become pregnant, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before using this medicine.
There is insufficient experience or research on the safety of using Chlorhexamed fluid during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Therefore, you should only use Chlorhexamed fluid with special caution and after consulting your doctor.
Driving and operating machinery
Chlorhexamed fluid has no or negligible influence on the ability to drive and use machines.
Chlorhexamed fluid contains macrogolglycerol hydroxystearate, the dye Ponceau 4 R Red (E 124) and alcohol.
Macrogolglycerol hydroxystearate can cause skin irritation as well as stomach upset and diarrhea.
Ponceau 4R Red (E 124) can cause allergic reactions.
This medicine contains 7 vol% ethanol (alcohol), i.e. up to 900 mg per dose, corresponding to 23 ml of beer, 9 ml of wine per dose.
The small amount of alcohol in this medicine has no noticeable effect. It can cause a burning sensation on damaged skin.
How should the medicine be taken?

Always use this medicine exactly as described in this leaflet or exactly as directed by your doctor or pharmacist. Check with your doctor or pharmacist if you are not sure.
The following information applies unless your doctor has prescribed Chlorhexamed fluid differently.
Please follow the instructions for use, otherwise Chlorhexamed fluid will not work properly! Do not exceed the specified dosage.

Adults:
Use the fluid twice a day, preferably in the morning and evening after meals.

For each application, fill the dosing cap to the marking line (15 ml) and rinse for 1 minute in the mouth (pull intensively through the interdental spaces) or gargle in the throat. Then spit out - do not swallow or rinse. In case of inflammation of the oral mucosa caused by dentures, the denture should be placed in Chlorhexamed fluid for at least twice a day after cleaning for 15 to 20 minutes. Rinse mouth additionally as described above.
At least 5 minutes before using Chlorhexamed fluid, the teeth should be brushed and then the oral cavity rinsed thoroughly with water (see section 2:
"Using Chlorhexamed fluid with other medicines").
Especially when combating inflammatory periodontal disease (periodontal disease), it is important to clean the teeth thoroughly before each mouthwash in order to ensure better adhesion of Chlorhexamed fluid to the tooth surface and thus effective inhibition of plaque growth (plaque).
In intensive care cases or manually disabled patients who are unable to actively rinse their mouths, Chlorhexamed fluid can be used to remove plaque by brushing.
The solution is ready to use and should therefore be used undiluted.

Duration of use
The duration of treatment depends on the clinical picture and the clinical course, it is up to 3 weeks in addition to normal tooth brushing. Consult your doctor if the inflammation has not improved after this time. Prolonged use of Chlorhexamed fluid should only be after consultation with your doctor.
In special cases, e.g. in the case of disabled people, preventive treatment can also be carried out over a longer period of time.
Please talk to your doctor or pharmacist if you have the impression that the effect of Chlorhexamed fluid is too strong or too weak.
If you have used more Chlorhexamed fluid than you should
Always use Chlorhexamed fluid exactly as described in this leaflet and do not exceed the specified dosage. If you have nevertheless used a larger amount of Chlorhexamed fluid, rinse your mouth with water and spit it out again. Severe poisoning symptoms are not known. If symptoms occur, consult a doctor if necessary.
Due to the alcohol content, swallowing can lead to alcohol poisoning and gastrointestinal disorders, especially in small children.
