WHAT ARE TALCID CHEWABLE TABLETS AND WHAT ARE THEY USED FOR?

Due to a stressful everyday life, but also due to heavy and fatty foods, excessive consumption of alcohol, coffee and nicotine, excess stomach acid can develop. The excess stomach acid can irritate the gastric mucosa and cause discomfort, such as heartburn, stomach pain, sour taste in the mouth and reflux (which is the rise of stomach acid through the esophagus).

Talcid is an antacid.
Excessive activity of stomach acid and pepsin (a digestive enzyme that serves to break down protein) can lead to stomach pressure, acid discomfort and damage to the gastric mucosa. Therefore, it is important to normalize the concentration of stomach acid and the amount of pepsin. Talcid creates normal pepsin and acid levels for a longer period of time by rapidly and continuously binding excess stomach acid. Pepsin activity is sustainably inhibited. Burping, after-acidification or an influence on the acid-base balance in the organism do not occur after Talcid. Talcid very quickly and for up to 1 1/2 hours adjusts the acid environment in the stomach to the optimal range for treatment (pH 3 - 5).

It is used for
Heartburn and other stomach problems caused by stomach acid
Gastric and duodenal ulcers (ulcus ventriculi and ulcus duodeni) after consultation with the attending physician.

Since Talcid contains only 0.0086 bread units (BE) per tablet and is sodium-free, it can be taken in particular by diabetics and patients with high blood pressure.

What should you consider before taking it?

WHAT SHOULD YOU CONSIDER BEFORE TAKING TALCID – CHEWABLE TABLETS?

Talcid chewable tablets must not be taken,

• if you are allergic to hydrotalcite or any of the other ingredients of this medicine listed in section 6.
• if your kidney function is severely impaired
• if the phosphate content in your blood is too low (hypophosphatemia)
• if you are known to have myasthenia gravis (a rare autoimmune disease with severe muscle weakness depending on exertion).

Warnings and precautions
Please talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking Talcid chewable tablets,

• if you suffer from kidney failure (renal insufficiency), especially if you take it for a long time and in high doses. There is a risk of aluminum poisoning as well as increased magnesium and decreased phosphate levels in the blood, especially if you have a low-phosphate diet. In the case of severe kidney failure, you should only use Talcid if your aluminum and magnesium blood levels are checked regularly.
• if you take Talcid chewable tablets for a long time. There is a risk of increased aluminum storage. For this reason, you should avoid taking it for a long time, or have your aluminum blood level checked regularly (this should not exceed 40 micrograms per liter).
• if you are a patient with impaired kidney function, especially if you are on dialysis, have Alzheimer's disease or other forms of dementia, or have a reduced phosphate content in your blood serum (hypophosphatemia) or are currently on a low-phosphate diet, long-term and higher-dose use should be avoided.

Stomach and intestinal problems can be signs of serious illnesses. If the symptoms persist or if the expected success is not achieved by using it, medical advice is required as soon as possible.
Taking Talcid chewable tablets together with other medicines
Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking / using, have recently taken / used or intend to take / use any other medicines.
Taking certain medicines (e.g. the antibiotics tetracycline, ciprofloxacin and ofloxacin, coumarin derivatives (blood thinners), H2 receptor blockers, iron preparations, digoxin (medicine for heart failure), chenodeoxycholic acid (medicine for gallstones), cimetidine (stomach protection) and sodium fluoride) with Talcid reduces their absorption. They may therefore no longer work. Therefore, you must not take Talcid together with these medicines.
Therefore, you must generally keep an interval of at least 2 hours between taking other medicines and Talcid.

When taking Talcid chewable tablets with food and drinkThe simultaneous intake of acidic foods (e.g. wine, fruit juices,...) leads to an increased absorption of aluminum. You should therefore not take Talcid at the same time as acidic foods.
Pregnancy and breast-feeding
Ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking any medicine. Aluminum compounds pass through the placenta into the circulation of the unborn child and into breast milk. Reports of harmful effects of hydrotalcite during pregnancy and breastfeeding have not become known, however, Talcid chewable tablets should only be used for a short time during pregnancy to avoid possible aluminum exposure to the unborn child.
Driving and using machines
Talcid chewable tablets have no influence on the ability to drive and use machines.

How should the medicine be taken?

HOW TO TAKE TALCID CHEWABLE TABLETS?

Unless otherwise prescribed by your doctor, the usual dose for adults and adolescents is

• Heartburn and other stomach problems caused by stomach acid: 1-2 chewable tablets as needed.
• Gastric and duodenal ulcers: 2 chewable tablets 3-4 times a day after meals and before bedtime. Treatment should be continued for at least 4 weeks after symptoms subside.

The chewable tablets should be chewed well.
A daily dose of a total of 12 chewable tablets must not be exceeded.
If the symptoms persist for more than two weeks during therapy, they should be clarified by your doctor in order to rule out a possible organic disease. Use in children and adolescents: No data are available for children under 12 years of age.
If you have taken more Talcid chewable tablets than you should
No cases of overdose have been reported.
If you forget to take Talcid chewable tablets
Do not take a double dose if you have forgotten to take the previous dose.
