Their firm, crisp flesh, the intense, sweet taste and the refreshing juiciness as well as their unique variety of types – these are the reasons for the popularity of apples. Of the over 20,000 existing apple varieties, about 30 have greater market significance, with new varieties constantly being introduced to the market. The cream-coloured flesh is juicy and firm. If Golden Delicious is harvested late, its flesh is floury. When fully ripe, the apples are sweet and aromatic and somewhat aniseed-like. Origin
The original home of the apple is between the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea. Over thousands of years, it has spread to all parts of the world. The apple is the favourite fruit of the Germans. The average German consumes 20 kg per year. About half of this comes from domestic production and half from imports. The German harvest amounts to 600,000 to 700,000 t per year, imports amount to 600,000 t. The main exporting countries are Italy, France, Austria and the Netherlands. Further imports reach us in spring and summer from the southern hemisphere (Chile, Argentina, Brazil, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand).

Tips
The combination of nutrients in apples is ideal as a snack or after exercise, during school breaks or when travelling. On the one hand, apples are thirst-quenching because of their water and acid content, on the other hand they contain quickly utilisable carbohydrates.

Preparation
The apple is the main type of fruit for eating fresh. It is also often used to prepare salads (fruit, potato, herring, Waldorf salad, etc.), for apple strudel, cakes and tarts of various kinds, for baked apples, raw vegetable platters, etc. The apple is a special culinary treat with fried liver with onions and mashed potatoes. Otherwise, cookbooks offer a wealth of recipes for apples.

About the producers

Managed by the wine and fruit growers Eng. Franz and Edith Mayer at the Moahof in Obersdorf.
Here is their philosophy in their own words:

Where the vast plains of the Marchfeld meet the gentle hills of the Weinviertel, our tasty organic apples and organic pears ripen on an area of about 10 ha. We, Franz and Edith Mayer, cultivate our organic farm northeast of Vienna in Obersdorf with the active help of our son Vinzenz and our seasonal workers.

Through hard work in all weather conditions, careful consideration before we act and the help of our allies, the beneficial insects, such as ladybugs, lacewings and spiders, we face the growing challenges of organic fruit growing.

We attach great importance to the real ripeness and taste of our fruits, which is reflected in increased harvesting and corresponding feedback from our customers. Our scab-resistant main apple variety Topaz is characterised by a particularly high fruit weight, among many other things, and therefore suggests high intrinsic values, which are created by above-average hours of sunshine.

When planting new varieties, we are not influenced by the current trend, i.e. taste must come before appearance.

The VON HERZEN organic farmers have existed in their present form since 2008. By joining forces with Austrian organic farmers, their strengths have been bundled in a future-oriented way. Every year, around 25,000 tonnes of organic fruit are marketed through this producer organisation. It serves as a direct link between farmers and consumers. This is unique and offers customers the opportunity to do more for the development of organic farming and our domestic agriculture.

The farms are located in different regions of Styria and Lower Austria. In Styria, the organic apple comes from the East Styrian hills, South Styria and West Styria. The Lower Austrian farms cultivate the orchards in the wine and cider region.

Storage recommendation

Apples should not be stored in the refrigerator. They stay fresh best in dark, cool storage rooms.
