Animal welfare is the order of the day - "This is our Berger FAIRspeak"
Animal welfare and sustainability are economically and morally the order of the day and also correspond to the wishes of consumers. The establishment of the Berger Animal Welfare Initiative is therefore the "logical complement and continuation" of the company's own regionality and climate protection programme. "In this way, we succeed in pushing the good things from the region, supporting the farmers in the area and enabling the animals to live in a manner appropriate to their species," explains Rudolf Berger. High-quality products with outstanding taste are ensured through the responsible handling of the animals. "Animal welfare is the basis for maximum enjoyment," says Mag. Berger.
Pig fatteners "around the church tower" provide valuable raw material
.The animals for the Berger Animal Welfare Programme grow up responsibly and in a species-appropriate manner on farmer-owned supplier farms around the production site in Lower Austria. The animals get much more space, outdoor exercise and soft straw bedding. "With this, we are also meeting the long-standing demand of animal protection organisations," says Rudolf Berger. The pigs can live out their instincts - from exercise to social contact - and are fattened exclusively with guaranteed GMO-free feed from the local area. The criteria for the programme were defined as 100 % more space per animal than required by law, the separation of lying and activity areas, no fully slatted floor, soft straw bedding, the possibility to exercise and no tail docking and castration under anaesthesia. The first farmers have carried out the corresponding conversion measures on their farms and are now supplying the raw material for the new product line. The Berger family's goal is clearly to expand and promote animal welfare. The programme is controlled by AMA Tierwohl.
