How is it applied?

WHAT IS PROSPAN® AKUT AND WHAT IS IT USED FOR?

Prospan® akut is a herbal medicinal product for loosening mucus in coughs associated with colds.

Prospan® akut makes it easier to cough up, relaxes the bronchial muscles and thus calms the cough.

If you do not feel better or even worse after 1 week, consult your doctor.

Ingredients

65mg dry ivy leaf extract 5-7.5:1, extractant ethanol 30% (m/m); contains 29.7mg lactose; 202 mg sorbitol

What SHOULD YOU CONSIDER BEFORE TAKING PROSPAN® AKUT?

Prospan® akut must not be taken
if you are allergic to dry ivy leaf extract or to other plants of the aralia family (e.g. ginseng) or to any of the other ingredients of this medicine listed in section 6.

Warnings and precautions
Please talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking Prospan® akut.
If shortness of breath, fever or purulent sputum occurs, a doctor must be consulted.

The simultaneous use of this medicine with medicines that suppress cough (antitussives such as codeine or dextromethorphan) without a doctor's
direction is not recommended.

Caution is recommended for patients with gastritis or stomach ulcers.

Children
Prospan® akut is not suitable for children under 4 years of age.

Taking Prospan® akut with other medicines
No interaction studies have been carried out.

Inform your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking/using or have recently taken/used or intend to take/use any other medicines.

Taking Prospan® akut with food and drink Note for diabetics
1 effervescent tablet contains 579.0 mg of carbohydrates corresponding to 0.05 BE (bread units).

Pregnancy and breast-feeding
If you are pregnant or breast-feeding, or if you suspect you may be pregnant or intend to become pregnant, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking this medicine.

Since there are insufficient data, use during pregnancy and breastfeeding cannot be recommended.

Driving and ability to operate machinery
No studies have been carried out on the effects on driving and ability to operate machinery.

Prospan® akut contains sodium, lactose, sorbitol and macrogolglycerol hydroxystearate
One effervescent tablet contains 6.58 mmol (or 151.33 mg) of sodium. If you have to follow a low-salt diet, you should take this into account.

One effervescent tablet contains 29.7 mg lactose and 202 mg sorbitol.
Please only take Prospan® akut after consulting your doctor if
you are known to suffer from a sugar intolerance.

One effervescent tablet contains 0.2 mg macrogol glycerol hydroxystearate, which can cause stomach upset and diarrhoea.

How should the medicine be taken?

HOW TO TAKE PROSPAN® AKUT?

Always take this medicine exactly as described in this leaflet or as agreed with your doctor or pharmacist. Check with your doctor or pharmacist if you are not sure.

The recommended dose is:

Adults and adolescents aged 12 and over: 1 effervescent tablet 2 times a day

Children aged 4 to 12: 3 times daily ½ effervescent tablet

Prospan® akut is not suitable for children under 4 years of age.

The effervescent tablet can be divided into equal doses.

Type of application
For ingestion after dissolving.
The effervescent tablets are dissolved in a glass of water (100 ml - 200 ml) and taken. Both hot and cold water can be used for dissolving.

Duration of use
If the symptoms worsen or there is no improvement after 1 week, you should consult a doctor.

If you have taken a larger amount of Prospan® akut than you should
In case of overdose, irritation of the digestive tract and possibly vomiting may occur. The symptoms are reversible when the preparation is discontinued.

If you have forgotten to take Prospan® akut
Do not take twice the amount if you have forgotten to take it before. Continue taking the medicine as prescribed by your doctor or as described in the package leaflet.

What are the possible side effects?

HOW TO STORE PROSPAN® AKUT?

Do not store above 25°C. Store in the original packaging to protect the contents from moisture.

Keep this medicine out of the reach of children.

You must not use the medicinal product after the expiry date which is stated on the outer carton and the foil strip after "expiry date". The expiry date refers to the last day of the specified month.

Contents of the pack and other information
What Prospan® akut contains
- The active substance is: dry extract of ivy leaves.
1 effervescent tablet contains 65 mg dry ivy leaf extract (ratio of drug to extract 5 - 7.5 : 1, extraction agent: ethanol 30% (m/m)).
- The other ingredients are: Anhydrous citric acid, sodium hydrogen carbonate, sodium carbonate, mannitol (E 421), simethicone, saccharin sodium, sodium cyclamate, sodium citrate dihydrate, sorbitol (E 420), medium-chain triglycerides, macrogol glycerol hydroxystearate, orange flavouring (contains 29.7 mg lactose).
