1. What is Activir - cold sore cream and what is it used for?

Activir cold sore cream is an externally applied medicine containing the active substanceAciclovir. This viral inhibitor causes a targeted inhibition of viral replication in human cells infected with herpes viruses. This causes the viral infection ("fever blister") to subside.

Activir - fever blister cream is used to relieve the pain and itching of fever blisters on the face. The cold sore cream should be applied thinly to the affected areas of skin

What is Activir - cold sore cream and what is it used for?

Activir - cold sore cream is an externally applied medicine containing the active substance aciclovir. This viral inhibitor causes a targeted inhibition of viral replication in human cells infected by herpes viruses. This causes the viral infection ("cold sore") to subside.

Activir - Cold Sore Cream must not be used,
- if you are allergic to aciclovir, valaciclovir, propylene glycol or any of the other ingredients of this medicine listed in section 6. other ingredients mentioned in section 6 of this medicine.

Warnings and precautions
Please talk to your doctor or pharmacist before using Activir - cold sore cream.
Special care is needed,
- if you are not sure if you have cold sores. Ask your doctor for advice on this. Activir - cold sore cream must not be used for a skin infection other than cold sores, e.g. genital herpes or inflammation of the mouth or nose.
- if, after 10 days of treatment at the latest, the blisters have not crusted over or healed or your herpes infection even gets worse, please consult a doctor.
- if there is a more severe course of the disease or repeated occurrences. In this case, please contact your doctor.
- in case of contact with mucous membranes. Activir - cold sore cream should not be applied to the mucous membrane in the mouth and vagina as this could cause temporary irritation.
- on contact with the eye. Activir - cold sore cream must never be used on the eye. If you accidentally get cream in your eye, wash it out thoroughly with warm water and consult your doctor if you have any concerns.
- in the presence of severe disorders of the body's immune system (e.g. in the case of a bone marrow transplant or AIDS). Please contact a doctor about this before starting treatment.

Activir - cold sore cream should not be used to prevent herpes simplex infections as there is insufficient experience of long-term use.

Use Activir - cold sore cream with other medicines
Please tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking/using, have recently taken/used or do not intend to take/use any other medicines.

There is currently no evidence of interaction of Activir - cold sore cream with other active substances.

Pregnancy and breast-feeding
Be sure to ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking/using any medicines.

If you are pregnant or breast-feeding, or if you suspect you may be pregnant or intend to become pregnant, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before using this medicine.

The doctor will decide on the use of Activir cold sore cream during pregnancy on a case-by-case basis. When Activir cold sore cream is used, the absorption of the active substance into the body is very low.

The dose reached by a breastfed baby after application of Activir cold sore cream to the mother is negligible.

Driving and ability to operate machinery
No special precautions are needed.

This medicinal product contains 400 mg propylene glycol per 1 g cream.
Propylene glycol may cause skin irritation.

This medicinal product contains 67.5 mg cetylstearyl alcohol per 1 g cream.
Cetylstearyl alcohol may cause local skin irritation (e.g. contact dermatitis).

This medicinal product contains 7.5 mg sodium dodecyl sulphate per 1 g cream.
Sodium dodecyl sulphate may cause local skin reactions (such as a stinging or burning sensation) or increase skin reactions caused by other products applied to the same skin area.

How should the medicine be taken?

How to use Activir - cold sore cream?

Always use this medicine exactly as described in this leaflet or as your doctor or pharmacist has told you. Check with your doctor or pharmacist if you are not sure.

The recommended dose is:

Activir - cold sore cream should be applied to the affected areas of skin 5 times a day at regular intervals (every 4 hours). When applying the cream, care should be taken that not only the already visible signs of herpes (blisters, swelling, redness) are covered with the cream, but that adjacent areas are also included in the treatment.

The duration of treatment is usually 4 days. If the condition worsens during treatment or if the blisters have not crusted over or healed after 10 days of treatment at the latest, a doctor should be consulted.
Treatment with Activir - cold sore cream should be started at the earliest possible time when the first signs such as itching, redness and a feeling of tightness appear. However, treatment can also be started at a later stage (when nodules or a cold sore appear).

Please follow the recommended dosages exactly.
If the application is done with the hand, it should be washed thoroughly before and after to prevent additional infection of the damaged skin area or transmission to other persons.

If you have used a larger amount of Activir - cold sore cream than you shouldIf you have accidentally used too much or swallowed cream, no negative effects are to be expected. However, if you have swallowed a large amount of cream, please talk to your doctor or pharmacist.

If you forget to use Activir - Cold Sore Cream
You should use Activir - Cold Sore Cream as soon as possible. Continue the application in the manner described as soon as you remember. Do not use twice the amount if you have forgotten to use it before.
